It never ceases to amaze me that from my home in Vancouver’s Felida neighborhood, it’s just about an hour’s drive to Mount Hood Village. And from there, you have your pick of three incredible ski resorts.
The first stop is Mt. Hood SkiBowl, boasting 960 acres of terrain. It’s also a nighttime haven, offering both skiing and tubing under the lights—a magical experience in the crisp mountain air.
Next up is the Timberline Ski Area, home to the historic Timberline Lodge, built in 1937. Whether you opt for an overnight stay or simply drop by the bar for a drink, the lodge’s charm is undeniable. Timberline also holds a unique distinction: it’s the only ski area in the U.S. with runs open for 10 months of the year. With 1,685 skiable acres, the warmer months mean fewer trails, but the opportunity to ski nearly year-round is a rare treat.
Finally, there’s Mt. Hood Meadows, the largest of the three, covering an impressive 2,150 skiable acres. I love taking my time in the morning, heading out around 10 a.m. to arrive just in time for the afternoon session starting at noon—sometimes for as little as $49 (though it’s always worth checking their website for deals).
There’s something special about being able to “pop over” to Mt. Hood for a day of adventure in the snow. Whether you’re skiing, snowboarding, or tubing, the journey is no longer than some people’s daily commute. I can’t say I envy those with a work commute that long—but for a day in the mountains? It’s a short drive, and a beautiful one at that.
