Your New Favorite Room Has No Roof

The house we lived in when the kids were little was every bit as cute (and as small) as they were. During the winter months it often felt cramped, and I found myself wishing for more space.

Then spring would arrive.

Almost overnight, our little house seemed to gain two new rooms: an outdoor dining room and an outdoor living room. We ate dinner outside, lingered over morning coffee, watched the kids play, and spent evenings visiting with friends. As long as the weather cooperated, our backyard became part of our home, and suddenly the house felt just right.

We lived there for 13 wonderful years before eventually moving to a larger home, during the winter . . unsurprisingly.

That experience has stayed with me, and it’s one of the reasons I often tell my clients, “Backyards sell houses.”
A beautiful backyard is about so much more than landscaping. Whether it’s a resort-style retreat or simply a comfortable patio with a table, a few chairs, and soft lighting, outdoor spaces have a remarkable way of expanding how a home feels without adding a single square foot.

More homeowners are discovering that “extra space” doesn’t always require a costly addition or remodel. Sometimes it’s simply about making better use of the space you already have. A thoughtfully designed patio becomes an extension of everyday life. It’s where morning coffee tastes a little better, summer dinners last a little longer, and conversations continue well after the sun goes down. Add comfortable seating, a few planters, string lights, or a fire pit, and an ordinary backyard becomes one of the most-used spaces in the house.

Some of life’s best moments don’t happen indoors. They happen under the open sky. When I’m helping buyers evaluate a home, I always encourage them to imagine not just the rooms inside, but the life they could create outside. Sometimes the best room in the house isn’t a room at all.
