Bathroom Facelift

Where to Spend and Where to Save

For years I worked closely with a group of investors who were flipping houses.  This was during the “foreclosure years” of 2009 – 2012 when homes were being sold in foreclosure auctions and my clients were buying homes daily.

We made these homes beautiful but we worked inside of a tight budget. I got very good at spending the smart money and bathrooms were always a good place to exercise this muscle.

If the bathroom was full of brass fixtures (like the photo above), we replaced the knobs/pulls/lighting, but took shortcuts for the shower trim and tub fixtures using Rust-Oleum paint. The shower trim is probably obvious — replacing the entire shower surround would be expensive just to get rid of the brass. But the tub fixtures, not so pricey to purchase, but can be very difficult to install depending on how the tub was built.

In the past couple of decades, bathroom mirrors have become more than simply functional; they are decorative and statement-making. Add a chandelier over the tub perhaps. Beautifully transformed bathroom on a shoestring budget!
